I bought this book because I read in a biography of John D. Rockefeller by Nevins that this was one of his favorite books. He enjoyed having it read aloud over and over, in the evening as his family sat together around the fire after dinner. I wanted to know what it was about this book that interested him so.It is a very delightful little read, written in a Scottish dialect that is for me a little difficult, but not totally impossible to verbalize. If you read it aloud you can almost hear the characters own voices and get a feeling for their lives and culture and for the time in which they lived. It makes me smile. I am glad I bought it and it sits now on the shelf adjacent to the biography of John D. (which I absolutely loved). We sometimes think we know a person, but only when we explore the things they liked and places they frequented do we get a chance to know what their lives were really like beyond the opinion of a historian. Beside the Bonnie Briar Bush, a very gentle tale of family and impeccable moral conduct confirms for me that John D. was a person I would have been very proud to call friend.
The setting and demeanor of the characters in this book are indicative of a window of history few have bothered to recall. The dialogue captures a time and place found now only in rare little jewels such as this sweet volume.

Arrived in a timely manner. Item as described.
Difficult to read.
Makes it just too hard to read to be enjoyable. Some with translation would bring the English reader into enough understanding to carry on.
This is a great, nostalgic read.
Although it's a bit difficult to translate the highlander English, there is many a lesson that applies to the modern day, just as it did a few decades ago.
Emotional at times.
a good read.
This may be hard to get, but I enjoyed it greatly. Old books are the best and it has good spiritual content.
How refreshing to be able to visualize the Scottish village life back yonder. The simplicity, honesty, skillful writing brought Scottish life and life in the Church and School very much alive. The Chapter title His Mother's Sermon should be read annually by every minister of the Word and Sacrament.
